Maternity Reflexology is a branch of reflexology specifically aimed at women (and, men during pre-conception) during; pre-conception/fertility; pregnancy; labour and the post-natal period.

Fertility

Reflexology can help with both physical and emotional blockages to help boost fertility potential in men and women. It can also help prepare the body and mind for IVF treatments.

Pregnancy

Author and obstetrician Dr Gowri Motha has explored alternatives to conventional obstetric practice for more than 20 years and has worked with many famous clients. In her book The Gentle Birth Method (1), she says reflexology is ‘one of the most powerful tools in my programme.’

She lists some of the ways reflexology can help during pregnancy:

  • eliminate oedema and reduce swelling in the feet and ankles
  • prevent heartburn
  • reduce and normalize high blood pressure
  • improve sleep quality
  • clear headaches
  • relieve varicose veins
  • clear pelvic congestion
  • improve lymphatic drainage
  • aids digestion
  • oxygenate the baby by improving blood flow within your whole body, your uterus and placenta
  • can be used to initiate labour if you are overdue, thereby reducing the need for medical induction in hospital

What happens during a Pregnancy Reflexology treatment?

Your first appointment will last around an hour to allow time for a consultation. We will complete a form and discuss any health issues you have and any medication you are taking. This will allow me to check for any contra-indications and to tailor the treatment just for you. If any concerns arise, you may need to check with your midwife or GP before treatments can commence.

I will then ask you to remove your shoes and socks and to make yourself comfortable on the treatment couch, with the option of a cosy blanket.

Comfort is paramount for my pregnant clients so typically the treatments I offer tend to be slightly shorter than a regular session (up to 45 minutes) to avoid sitting for too long and I have pillows and cushions on hand to support you.

Once you are comfortable, the relaxation begins as I cleanse your feet with a hot towel. Some people like to talk during a treatment whilst others prefer to be quiet and close their eyes. I take my lead from you but I will check in with you from time to time for feedback.

During the treatment I will work the reflexes by applying pressure and by sliding over specific reflex areas. Some areas may be uncomfortable depending on the individual but this is usually only transient (and most people describe this as quite a pleasant sensation!)

Near the end of your session, I may use some more gentle techniques with the option of a foot massage using a nourishing cream. Most people have a feeling of relaxation, a release of tension and an improved sense of well-being after a treatment.

Afterwards you will be encouraged to spend a few minutes relaxing on the couch with a glass of filtered water and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions.

When it’s time to leave, my clients tend to feel much lighter and brighter.

If this sounds like something you’d like to try, please get in touch.
